Maria Morales-Prieto is the founder, president and CEO of The Hispanic Network (THN), a public relations and marketing firm dedicated to bridging the gap between the burgeoning Hispanic market and the world. Maria also hosts monthly networking dinners for her firm’s member-driven “THN Group.” Before founding THN, she served as the executive director of the Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, overseeing its daily operations, including the hosting of monthly networking events and partnering with local organizations. In a year and a half, Maria grew the chamber’s membership roster and monthly participation by six times! She also launched the chamber’s business incubator called the “Smart Business Exchange,” which was made possible by a $500k grant from New York State, which she also managed. Maria is best known, though, for her work at Latin Long Island magazine where she served as managing editor, writing, editing, designing, supervising the many writers and planning the publication’s two galas per year. Under Maria’s direction, the magazine doubled its subscription base and tripled its circulation. Maria co-produced a documentary for PBS entitled The Cuban Americans, enlisting her many famous Cuban-American friends to be interviewed for the piece. She also founded and served as editor of her own publication, El Informal, which was dedicated to Cuban exiles around the globe, and was commissioned to create a sitcom for a producer with the Fox network, Nely Galan of GaLAn Entertainment, who was once a contestant on the mega hit show, Celebrity Apprentice. Maria has written columns for various publications such as Long Island Business News, Catalina magazine and Divina.com. In 2002, she was listed by Newsday as one of Long Island’s most influential Hispanics. Maria is featured in the NY Times best selling book about successful Latinas called La Vida Rica by Yrma Rico and has received many awards for her work as a writer and editor, as well as for her contributions to non-profits such as the Multiple Sclerosis Society, The Boy Scouts of America, The Girl Scouts of America, 100 Black Men and Child Abuse Prevention Services, to name a few. Maria has also served on various media and business panels and has delivered keynote addresses for organizations such as NYS Assemblyman Tom Alfano’s “Women of Distinction.” In 2009, she served as a judge for the Fair Media Council’s Folio Awards and was the first Hispanic master of ceremony at Nassau County’s 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. 23rd Anniversary Birthday Celebration! Maria also serves as the regular emcee at the Boy Scouts Annual Hispanic Luncheons and Uniondale’s John J. Bryne’s Community Center fundraisers. Maria is on the board of directors for the Theodore Roosevelt Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Suffolk County Minority Business Council and the Long Island Advancement of Small Business. In April 2010, Maria was named by the Queens Courier one of its “Business Women of the Year,” in July 2010, she was given a Certificate of Appreciation by Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and in Sept. 2010, she was featured in Long Island Business News, celebrating her company’s first anniversary. In Jan. 2011, Maria was chosen by the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs to take part in a delegation of Hispanic leaders invited to visit Israel to meet with President Shimon Peres and to introduce them to the marvelous wonders of this extraordinary country. Interestingly, Maria is the great grand daughter of Cuba’s second president, Jose Miguel Gomez and the grand niece of another Cuban president, Miguel Mariano Gomez. The inaugural ADVOCATES FOR CHILDREN & YOUTH AWARDS COCKTAIL RECEPTION took place on Tuesday, September 13, 2011, 6pm to 8pm, at The Omni, 333 Earle Ovington Boulevard, Uniondale. Hosted by Forchelli, Curto, Deegan, Schwartz, Mineo, Cohn, and Terrana LLP.
